Capsule Wardrobe: Plus Size Edition (#1)
I knew when I started my capsule wardrobe journey that I would face a few extra battles as a plus size queen. I was right and you will probably face them too as a fellow plus size queen. The two major problems I faced were; “what is most flattering for my body shape?” and “where do I find quality, figure-flattering plus size clothes that won’t break my bank account?”. This article will be focused on finding figure-flattering clothing, but don’t fret! There will be a part 2 that discusses shopping coming out soon!
Figure-Flattering Silhouettes
We could do a whole diagram discussing the different fruit-shaped body types and how different silhouettes are flattering for them, but in true lazy girl fashion; let’s keep this simple. When I am purchasing clothes for my capsule or putting outfits together in my closet I keep these three rules in mind:
Loose on top, tight on bottom/tight on top, loose on bottom - doing this creates a sense of balance in your proportions
define your waist - this can help create an hourglass shape by accentuating your natural curves
don’t add unnecessary bulk - too many ruffles or layers can add more bulk and end up leaving you with no defined shape.
Please keep in mind these are general rules that anyone can follow, regardless of body shape. If you are more curious about your specific body shape and what is most flattering for you specifically, I highly encourage you to do some more research on your own.
What Should You Look For?
The first thing I want to mention is that when you are looking at clothes, think about their potential, not just how they look on the rack or mannequin. For example, a straight maxi dress would have the potential to be a figure-flattering midi dress with an added waist belt. Don’t overlook things you like just because they don’t seem made for your body right away.
Here is a list of ideas to help you get started. Remember, take what resonates with you and leave what doesn’t.
T-Shirts - This is one of the most versatile things you can have in your capsule! They can be cropped with an elastic band over dresses or with skirts to accentuate your waist. They can be worn with jeans or leggings. Dressed up. Dressed down. Worn year-round with appropriate layers. The possibilities are limitless! I highly recommend at least a few graphic tees that mean something to you. You will not regret having them.
Skirts - This is another versatile item for your capsule since they can also be dressed up or down. I recommend elastic waist skirts that can be worn at your natural waist or lower on your hips if you desire. Being able to adjust the size on demand is a huge bonus that will allow you to flatter your figure in different ways.
Dresses - Depending on where you shop, a lot of plus size dresses are already structured to be flattering. If they aren’t, remember you can belt them yourself to bring in your natural waist and create an A-line silhouette with minimal effort or spending.
Wide leg pants - These are a recent discovery of mine and I am absolutely obsessed! They sit at your natural waist by design so they are perfect for flattering a plus size figure. Pair them with a fitted top to balance out your proportions.
Peplum Tops - I’m sure you’ve seen these before, but they are fitted at the top with a seam just under the bust that flows out with pleats away from the body. They are essentially an A-line dress in shirt form and very flattering to a plus size figure.
Wrap Tops/Dresses - Perfect for accentuating the natural waist and taking attention away from the stomach area.
Crop Top Elastic Band - I bought one of these off of Amazon and it lets me turn any top into a temporary crop top. Highly recommend this to help you create outfits that accentuate your natural waist.
