Capsule Wardrobe: Southern Fall/Winter Essentials

If you live in Texas (or any southern climate) then you know the weather can be……unpredictable. Fall and Winter are essentially the same season and pop in and out from November to March. So when I was trying to make a list of essentials for my capsule wardrobe, all of my research was giving me lists of things for places that have true winters. Since snow boots and down winter coats don’t really apply, I decided to make my own list. That’s not to say that those items aren’t needed down here from time to time, but I wouldn’t consider them an essential by any stretch of the imagination. I would however, consider the following a list of southern fall and winter essentials for your capsule wardrobe;

  1. booties - a couple pairs in different colors that compliment your wardrobe

  2. jeans - darker wash and at least one pair of non-distressed

  3. lined leggings - flannel or fleece lined leggings or the currently viral legging “tights” or both!

  4. sweatshirts and sweaters

  5. cardigans - these allow you to layer some of your warmer weather clothes to be worn year round so get multiple colors

  6. jacket

  7. heavier coat (with one set of complimentary mittens/scarf)

  8. sneakers - neutral color and easily cleaned material

Keep in mind that most of your spring/summer clothes can also be worn in the fall and winter with some slight modifications. For example; cardigan over a tank top or the legging tights worn under a dress/sweater/tunic. Fall and winter in the south is all about layers! Dressing in layers allows you to remove or add layers throughout the day as needed to stay comfortable. Don’t forget to keep your color palette, wardrobe description and shopping rules in mind for all of these fall and winter purchases. Haven’t started your capsule wardrobe yet? Also let me know if you would like to see examples of everything I purchased in preparation for fall and winter.

Until next time,

Happy Styling
