Capsule Wardrobe: Southern Spring/Summer Essentials
I know it’s only February, but those of us in the South know that Spring and Summer are fast approaching. Warm weather clothing is already starting to hit store racks, but what do we buy for our capsules that will get us through the (much) warmer weather? The list below is one I compiled when I couldn’t find a true list of warm weather essentials. Remember when you’re shopping to keep your inspo pictures, shopping rules and chosen color palette close by. Haven’t started your capsule yet? Click here to get started!
sneakers - neutral color and easily cleaned material (this is also on the Fall/Winter essentials list because sneakers like this can be worn year round and either dressed up or down)
Jeans - any wash and at least one pair of non-distressed
Leggings - neutral colors that can mixed and matched with many different t-shirts or active wear tops
T-shirts and Tank Tops - make sure you have tops for different occasions or tops that can be dressed up or down with accessories
Cardigans - lightweight and neutral colors. Restaurants and businesses in the south tend to crank up the AC in the warmer weather which means you go from sweating to chilled just by walking through a doorway. Cardigans are a godsend when you’re shivering at dinner in July.
Skirts - different lengths/materials/neutral colors that can me mixed and matched with different shoes and tops. It probably goes without saying, but if you’re new to the South, lightweight materials are going to be your new obsession. For example, a corduroy skirt in the middle of August is doable, but miserable.
Dresses - different lengths/materials/colors for different occasions. A dress is the epitome of easy summer outfits. They can be dressed up or down with the right shoes and accessories and you don’t have fabric clinging to every surface of your skin, keeping you cooler.
Sandals - neutral colors and comfortable in different styles. I have a pair of brown, black and nude each in a low and high heel.
Some things to keep in mind;
-if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain in the warmer months then you may want to invest some of your capsule budget in a nice rain jacket and rain boots
-social media can be a great resource for outfit inspo if you are having a hard time putting together outfits with the items you’ve purchased
-warmer weather clothes are a great opportunity to add some pops of color or bright patterns to your capsule
If you saw my Fall/Winter Essentials list then you know this list is longer and more extensive. That is because we spend more time out of the year in warmer weather and need more clothes to rotate through. Don’t let that intimidate you, always remember that shopping for your capsule should be fun! Step out of your comfort zone and try new things, you never know what you might fall in love with.
Please keep in mind that I am a nurse, not a stylist. This is the list of my southern spring/summer essentials that I wanted to share in case someone else is struggling. If there’s anything you think I missed, let me know below!
Until next time,
Happy Shopping
