Renovating My Office
We bought a three bedroom, two bathroom, 2,000 square foot house just over three years ago. That’s plenty of space for just the two of us, but the house has one huge flaw that we have been trying to overcome since we moved in; not enough dedicated storage space. We will be slowly renovating the house room by room to add more storage and make the house our aesthetic. First up had to be our office space because there just wasn’t enough room for both of us in the dedicated office space. I decided to convert the smallest bedroom into my office and crafting space to let my husband have the actual office all to himself. The bedroom’s previous use was a mash-up of workout equipment and craft supply storage, but I had a vision for my perfect office and crafting space.
The Supplies
My inspiration for this room was mystical yet cozy forest vibes. I took two diamond paintings I had previously completed and used those as inspiration for both the decor and color palette. They would become part of the decor as well as the neon light that we already had. There were also a few other furniture items that I could re-use for my new space. The television never came off the wall as I knew I would want that for background noise while crafting. I also knew I was going to need storage options for my craft supplies and a table to work on crafts that would ideally fold away when not in use. I purchased a bookcase and rolling craft table with built-in storage as well as clear bins to help organize my craft supplies on the bookcase. Both were purchased on Amazon and I will link them below. I highly recommend them as they are great quality and come in many different finishes for anyone’s style.
The paint color I chose was Herb Cornucopia by Behr and I absolutely love it! I did two coats to ensure adequate coverage, but you may not have to do that second coat depending on what color you’re covering and what the gloss level is. After painting the room, my husband helped me move my desk (and everything on it) into place and then I built the furniture I had ordered. This was about the point where loading all of my craft supplies onto the furniture seemed an insurmountable task. After getting some rest, I went back the next day and got every little thing organized and in place. I was able to get all of my craft supplies into the rolling cart and bookcase and even had room leftover to display my “nerd stuff”. I hung the pictures and neon light on the wall and just like that, I had my own office with plenty of storage and space to do crafts. I now look forward to spending time in there to work on projects in my own space and my husband is excited to have his own dedicated space as well.
Other Notes
The cat posing as a model is my baby girl, Onyx. She just turned a year old in June and follows me everywhere. She likes to “help” with projects. The hammock coming off the corner of the desk is hers.
I didn’t show the closet of the bedroom because it’s strictly storage and has been previously renovated. We ripped out the closet organizer and hung shelving up the back wall. All of the paint and painting supplies are kept in there as well some other tools and household items. Under the shelving, on the floor is the litter robot with extra litter and other cat—related supplies. My husband 3D printed a door stop to keep one of the closet doors open just enough to allow the cats to get in and out of the closet.
This whole project took about 5 days total, but that’s only because I took frequent breaks due to my POTS. A lot of what you see in the pictures came from Amazon or were given to us as gifts from my parents to help furnish the house.
