Vegan Lobster Review

We have been trying to branch out and try other kinds of vegan meat that is available. My husband found some vegan seafood options on fakemeats.com so we bought a few different things to try. This past week, we tried the vegan lobster and I had really high hopes for this, but it fell a little short. Now keep in mind, I am a pescatarian so I eat real seafood fairly regularly. I knew the vegan option wouldn’t be as good as the real thing so I lowered by expectations quite a bit before tasting it. Before we get into the details of what we thought, let’s look at what the product actually is. We purchased this product through the aforementioned website, but it’s actually a Lily’s Vegan Pantry product. If you go to their website, the ingredients named in this product include water, yam flour, all purpose flour, salt, calcium hydroxide, seasoning flavor and paprika. The paprika is apparently used in minimal quantities to add the coloring you see on the back of the product. The listing also gives three different ways to cook the lobster; boiling, stir-frying or stewing. The cost of the product is around $12, but shipping cost us around $25 since it has to be shipped frozen.

My husband chose to boil the lobster and then make lobster rolls out of it. He added a little white wine, garlic and lemon before making the sandwiches. I will tell you that all I tasted were the ingredients he added. The lobster itself had no discernable flavor of it’s own which was very disappointing. My husband told me to try a plain piece to see if that was any different, but the lobster honestly didn’t taste like anything at all. Maybe there is something additional you are supposed to add on your own to enhance the flavor, but there’s no mention of anything like that on the listing or product packaging. As far as the texture, my husband took one bite and called it “meat jell-o”. Honestly I don’t know how I could describe it any better. As an avid seafood lover, the texture didn’t bother me as much as it did him. Overall, we were very disappointed in this product and said we probably wouldn’t buy it again.

We are still holding out hope for the other products we bought so stay tuned for those reviews!

Until Next Time,

Happy Swimming
